April 2008 Archives

The good folks over at Front Street Reviews broke tradition and gave me THREE reviews!  The editor, another review (from Austria), and another reviewer (from Maine) all read and reviewed Cluck.  It's official, people can't resist reading a book about zombie chickens.  There's a doctorate in psychology in store for the lucky person who figures that one out.

The full review(s) are available over at Front Street Reviews, but here are some excerpts:

"Definitely amusing and most bizarre this is an out of the ordinary first in the series which will have you clucking for more"
~ Ann Marie Chalmers (Austria)

"In this sure-to-be-timeless-classic, Knapp gives us extraordinary insight into the fowl mind. This book is surely Chicken Soul for the Soup."
~ Tom Morton (from Maine ... wait, is this the Tom of Maine? Maybe I can get a deal on toothpaste!)

"Knapp likes to compare his writing to Terry Pratchett and it is an accurate one."
~ Barb Radmore (the editor, also from Maine)

"The author is able to take an idea that is absurd and ridiculous and create a very well done, full bodied piece of literature. It would have been easy to let the book rest on its innovative plot but it is much more than just horror. Literature? With zombie roosters? Impossible! Not when as well written as Cluck has been."
~ Barb Radmore (again)

I was just officially compared to Terry Pratchett by a reviewer.  ... [momentary silence] ... and then I fainted.

IMG_0062.jpgI'll never know, because although I was standing close enough to take this picture, I didn't have a copy of my book with me at the time. This was taken at the RSA show in San Francisco. Not a big deal, I suppose: celebrities are all over the place on the west coast ... but to a NH native it's rare. Anyway, I didn't approach him or bother him, out of respect for both he and his bouncers. If I'd had a copy of my book with me, though, it might have been different. Stuff a book in his hand, take a photo, get punched by a bouncer ... yeah, might've been worth it.

Cluck is a fun and sometimes frightening book about zombies, chickens, zombie-chicken exorcists, and a rather personable old Ford sedan.

cult classic zombie book

"Destined to be a cult classic" - RW Ridley, Author of the Oz Chronicles

"One might predispose that a book about zombie chickens would be low-brow and intellectually void. That is certainly not the case with author Eric D. Knapp's 'Cluck: Murder Most Fowl', a literary romp through the world of undead chickens, and underdog anti-heroes." - Revenant Magazine

"[Cluck] introduces two new elements to the zombie mythos: 1) Zombie chickens. 2) A thoroughly developed premise and plot that combine humor with horror." - The Wire

From The Cover: IRREFUTABLE FACTS ABOUT CHICKENS:

  1. Chickens are dirty.
  2. Chickens are loud.
  3. Chickens are stupid.
When ancient and mysterious forces trap the souls of an entire flock of barnyard fowl between life and death, Bobby Garfundephelt has to agree. Trapped inside the myriad rooms of a labyrinthian farm, it's all he can do to avoid the twisted traps of the evil Rooster and his army of undead hens. Luckily for Bobby, the rumors of the ghostly guineas have reached the ears of the current Exorciste de Volaille. Armed only with a fox-headed staff, some heavy boots, and a utility belt full of cracked corn and Band-Aids, he must enter the henhouse of horrors to save Bobby, and to do battle with the Rooster himself!

For the lover of comedy with a twist, Cluck: Murder Most Fowl is a veritable Indian burn of mystery, adventure, horror, and humor from Eric D. Knapp, the award-winning author of Out of Place, Out of Time.

I had another zombie story in mind ... a more serious story that made grand political statements and all that. I'll probably still write that book, eventually, but it's been put on the back burner for the moment. There's been a change of plans.

You see, many people have asked me for a sequel to "Cluck" and a sequel is what they are going to get. The decision was an easy one for several reasons: I have fans now, and I feel I should listen to them; the "Cluck" characters are fun to write; and, well, there's just something compelling about writing a book called ...

(drumroll, please ...)
